On the 14th of May 2007 Mr Barack Obama, then a senator, tabled a billĀ authorising the establishment of a climate change education program. The bill, that he presented on his behalf, Ms Snowe and Mr Bingaman, was read twice but never saw the light of day. This bill agrees with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that greenhose gases are accumulating in the air causing global warning, and that human activities are the major cause for the accumulation of these gases. It further states that there are measures that can be taken to slow down the accumulation of these gases, siting the steps as being mandatory. These include, among others, conservation, renewable energy sources and enegy efficiency. Recognising the seriosness of the climate change issue, the bill then calls for a continuous education programme that would ensure that the American populace has a broad understanding of the subject. The program is also to promote the implementation of measures to address climate change. As Obama takes office, the world is waiting ito see if this bill will evenually become the 'Climate Change Education Act' and if we will see more climate change policy. |
